As both root and trunk thicken they press against each other and the root strangles the tree's transport tissue — the tell is a trunk that goes straight into the ground with no visible flare, often with dieback on one side. Caught early enough, the offending root can sometimes be cut. On a mature tree the damage is generally done.
Is it worth treating a tree that is already in decline?+
It depends on what fraction of the crown is gone and what is causing it. A tree that has lost a modest part of its canopy to a treatable cause, on a good site, is often worth the effort. A tree that has lost half its crown, or whose problem is root loss, compaction or a decayed base, generally is not — no treatment restores roots that were cut.
