How do I know if my tree is an ash?+

Very few Vermont trees combine opposite leaves with compound leaves — the main confusion is with maple, which is opposite but has simple leaves, and with black walnut, which is compound but alternate. If it is opposite and compound and not a maple, it is very likely ash.
What does emerald ash borer damage look like?+
It starts in the upper canopy, so the first sign is usually thinning and dieback at the top while the lower tree still looks fine. Then epicormic sprouts appear on the trunk as the tree tries to compensate, then D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across, then blonding where woodpeckers have flaked bark away chasing larvae. Blonding is often the most visible sign from a distance and is a reliable indicator that the tree is already heavily infested.
Is it worth treating my ash, or should I remove it?+
Treatment is a genuine option for a healthy, structurally sound ash you value, in a location where losing it would matter, and it works best started before the canopy has thinned much. Why is a dead ash more dangerous to remove than other dead trees?+

Can I move the wood from my ash to a camp or to a friend?+
