Can tree roots actually crack a foundation?+

A recurring root blockage is a sign the pipe has failed, not that the tree is aggressive — and the durable fix is lining or replacing the pipe, not removing the tree.
How close is too close for a new tree?+
Plan for at least half the species' mature crown spread from a wall, more for a large species, and keep large trees well clear of a septic field and leach lines. The mistake is judging by the sapling — the number that matters is the mature spread, which is in every species description and takes a minute to look up.
Is a root barrier worth installing?+
For a specific target, yes. A barrier installed vertically between the tree and the pavement or utility, deep enough to redirect roots downward, works well when it is put in when the target is built or resurfaced. Retrofitting one means trenching through existing roots, which is exactly the damage you are trying to avoid — so timing is most of the value.
Should I remove a tree that is lifting my driveway?+
Not as a first answer. Compare the cost of the pavement options — grinding the roots and resurfacing that section, a flexible surface, a bridged slab, or accepting a slightly uneven surface — against the cost of removal plus the loss of a mature tree. Removal often turns out to be the more expensive option once the tree is valued properly.
What happens to the ground when a large tree is removed?+
In some soils, more than expected. A mature tree removes a substantial volume of water daily, and the ground can become wetter and softer afterwards. In shrink-swell soils it can heave. On a site where the tree is close to a structure, that is worth asking about before the removal rather than discovering it as a new crack afterwards.
What should I check before doing anything near roots?+
Vermont's Dig Safe notification before any excavation, private services marked by you, and where the structural roots are. Trenching for a new drain, a fence line or a lamp post through a tree's root plate is the ordinary way mature trees are killed — and the symptoms appear two to five years later, long after anyone connects the two.
When should I get someone to look at this?+
Before cutting any root larger than your wrist, before trenching within the root zone of a tree you want to keep, and if a crack in a structure is being blamed on a tree. That last one is worth an independent view, because 'the tree did it' is a common and frequently wrong diagnosis that leads to an unnecessary removal.
