What is the fundamental difference between the two decisions?+
Timing and reversibility. A treatment decision is made early, on a tree that still has most of its canopy, and it commits you to a repeating cost for as long as you keep the tree. A hazardous-removal decision is made late, on a tree whose condition has already decided the outcome, and the only remaining question is how safely and cheaply it comes down.
When has the window for treatment closed?+
There is no single line, but the practical guidance is that treatment becomes markedly less likely to succeed once significant canopy has been lost — the tree's ability to move a systemic product around is itself damaged by the infestation. A tree with obvious thinning from the top down, epicormic sprouts and woodpecker blonding is generally past the point where treatment is a good bet.
Why does a dead ash cost more to remove than a live one?+
Because it cannot be climbed. Ash goes brittle unusually fast after death — within a couple of years the wood loses the toughness a climber relies on, branches snap without warning and the trunk can shatter rather than hinge. Crews move the job to a bucket or a crane, which brings a second machine, a longer setup and sometimes a road permit.
So is there a cost to waiting?+
A substantial and predictable one, which makes this different from most tree decisions. The same tree gets more expensive and more dangerous to remove every year you defer, and at some point the cheap options disappear entirely. That is the argument for making the decision while the tree is still sound, whichever way you decide.
How do I know which decision I am making?+
Look at the canopy. Full or near-full canopy, good structure, a tree you value: you are making a treatment decision and you have time to make it properly. Visible thinning from the top, sprouts on the trunk, bark flecking: you are making a removal decision and the question is scheduling, not whether.
Does treatment ever stop being worth it partway through?+
It can, and it is worth agreeing in advance what would end it. If a treated tree continues to decline over successive seasons, continuing to fund treatment on a tree that is losing the fight is money spent on delaying a removal that will be harder. A stated review point — canopy condition assessed each year — turns that into a decision rather than a drift.
Can a hazardous ash be pruned instead of removed?+
Rarely usefully. Taking the dead limbs out of a declining ash removes today's falling material and does nothing about the trunk, which is where brittleness matters. It also costs a bucket visit. On an ash that is going to come down within a few years, spending on pruning it first is usually spending twice.
What if the ash is not near anything?+
Then it is not a hazardous-removal decision at all — it is a treatment decision or nothing. An ash in a woodlot with nothing beneath it can be left to die and fall on its own schedule at no cost and no risk. Consequence is what turns a declining ash into a job, and where there is none there is no job.
Does removing one infested ash protect the others?+
No, and that is a common misunderstanding. The insect population is regional and highly mobile; removing an infested tree does not protect its neighbours in any meaningful way. Removal is a hazard and cost decision about that tree. Protecting a specific ash means treating that specific ash.
How many years does treatment need to continue?+
For as long as you want the tree, which is the part people underestimate. It is a maintenance regime rather than a cure, repeated on an interval set by the product and the applicator. That indefinite commitment is exactly why the decision should turn on whether the tree is genuinely worth it, not on whether treatment is technically possible.
Is a group of ash trees decided together?+
Sorted, not decided together. Rank them by what is underneath and by individual quality: the good ash over the driveway may be worth treating, the mediocre one behind the shed is a planned removal, the ones in the woods are left. Municipalities across this region have taken exactly that approach at scale, and it works the same on a private property.
What should I do first if I have ash and have done nothing yet?+
Identify them, then rank them by consequence, then decide each one. Most owners discover they have fewer trees requiring a decision than they feared, because the majority are either not ash or have nothing beneath them. The ones left — ash near a house, drive, road or outbuilding — are a small enough list to handle properly.
