Why is diagnosis so often skipped?+

Because a spray is a product you can sell and a diagnosis is time you have to charge for. It is also because a declining tree looks like it needs something done, and doing something feels better than investigating. The result is a great deal of money spent treating pathogens on trees whose actual problem was the mower, the mulch or a trench dug six years ago.

What is the most common cause of decline in this region?+

The site, not a pathogen. Soil compaction, roots cut or smothered by construction, grade changed over the root plate, mulch piled against the trunk, drainage altered, salt from a treated road, and a root flare buried at planting. Those account for most of what people describe as a sick tree, and none of them respond to a treatment.

What should be ruled out first?+

Anything mechanical or historical. Has the grade changed? Has anything been trenched, paved or driven on within the root zone in the last decade? Is the root flare visible at the base? Is mulch against the trunk? Is there a mower scar or a string-trimmer wound at the base? Those questions are free to ask and they resolve a large share of cases.

Why does construction damage show up years later?+

Because a tree draws on stored reserves and on the roots it has left, and the decline only becomes visible when those run short. Two to five years after the work is the standard interval, which is exactly long enough for nobody to connect the two. It is why the history matters more than the current symptoms.

What is a girdling root and how do I spot one?+

A root circling the trunk rather than growing outward, usually because it was left circling in a nursery container and planted that way. As both thicken they press together and the root strangles the tree's transport tissue. The tell is a trunk that enters the ground like a telegraph pole with no visible flare, often with dieback concentrated on one side.

What is wrong with mulch piled against the trunk?+

It keeps bark constantly moist so it rots, hides the root flare so nobody notices the tree is buried, encourages roots to grow up into the mulch and then circle the trunk, and shelters rodents that girdle bark in winter. It is extremely common, it is slow, and correcting it costs nothing but a rake.

When is a soil test worth doing?+

When someone is proposing to add something to the soil. A recommendation to fertilise without a soil test or a specific deficiency symptom is a recommendation to buy a product, not to fix a problem — a tree in a lawn that is fed and keeps its leaf litter generally has what it needs. If a nutrient issue is genuinely suspected, the test costs little and answers it.

How do I tell a foliar disease from something structural?+

By where and when it appears. Foliar problems typically affect leaves, often in wet springs, often on the lower and inner canopy first, and the tree usually recovers. Structural or root problems show as dieback starting at the top and the outer branches, thinning that worsens year on year, and no recovery. Top-down decline is the one to take seriously.

Are injections and drenches safe around my family?+

That has to be answered for the actual product, at the actual site, by the licensed applicator — pesticide applications are regulated activities with label requirements, re-entry intervals and licensing, and the specifics vary by product. Ask for the product name and the label before agreeing to anything, rather than accepting a general reassurance.

What does a proper diagnosis involve?+

Site history, a walk of the root zone, examination of the root flare and base, an assessment of the crown by pattern and direction of dieback, and only then consideration of a pathogen or insect — with samples where identification matters. A diagnosis that starts with a product name and works backwards is not a diagnosis.

Is it ever too late to treat?+

Frequently. A tree that has lost half its crown, or whose problem is root loss or compaction, will not be restored by any treatment, because nothing replaces roots that were cut. The honest question to ask is what a realistic best outcome looks like and what it costs to get there — if the answer is 'slightly less bad', it is not worth funding.

What can I do myself that actually helps?+

Pull the mulch back off the trunk and expose the root flare. Stop the mower and the string trimmer reaching the bark — a ring of mulch does that. Water deeply and infrequently over the whole root zone in a genuine drought rather than sprinkling daily. Those three cost nothing and address a real share of what ails trees in this region.
