What to look at on the union

Hardware addresses one specific movement, so the useful description is of the union rather than of the tree as a whole.

What problem is cabling actually solving?+

What is bracing, and how is it different?+

It is more invasive because it means drilling through living tissue, and it is normally installed together with a cable rather than instead of one — the rod handles the union, the cable limits the movement that loads it.

When is this worth doing?+

When the tree is otherwise healthy and genuinely worth keeping, the defect is a known union or an over-extended limb rather than general decline, and the alternative would be losing a large part of the crown. Think of it as a way of keeping a tree that is worth keeping. Adding hardware to a tree with a decayed base changes nothing about the actual problem.

Can it save a tree that has already split?+

Seldom, and it is the point where expectations most often part company with reality. Once a union has separated the fibres are broken and they do not rejoin — a tree seals around damage rather than healing it. Hardware installed afterwards restrains two pieces that are already independent. Occasionally that is a deliberate, monitored decision on a specimen tree; usually it is not.

How do I know if my tree has a weak union?+

Look at the join between two similar-sized stems. A strong union has a raised ridge of wood where they meet. A weak one has a tight V with a dark seam running down between the stems and no ridge — that seam is included bark, meaning the two stems pressed together as they grew with no wood connecting them. That is the classic cabling candidate.

How often does the hardware need inspecting?+

Annually is the common recommendation, plus a proper look after severe weather. Trees grow, anchors load differently over time, steel corrodes, synthetic systems have a service life. A cable installed and forgotten for fifteen years is not doing the job it was installed for, and it can become a hazard in its own right as the tree grows around the anchors.

How long does a system last?+

Steel hardware in a growing tree is commonly considered on a scale of years to a couple of decades with maintenance; synthetic systems carry a manufacturer's service life that is generally shorter. Neither is permanent. The realistic framing is that you are installing a system with a service interval, not making a one-time fix.

Does installing hardware harm the tree?+

Installation wounds it, and a healthy tree compartmentalises around anchors and rods without much difficulty. The harm comes from installing into a declining tree that cannot respond, or from leaving a system unmaintained until growth engulfs it. On a healthy tree, properly installed and inspected, the wound cost is modest against keeping the tree.

Should weight reduction be done at the same time?+

Usually yes, and a proposal that offers hardware alone is worth questioning. Reducing end weight on the limbs the cable restrains lowers the load the system has to carry, which makes the whole arrangement more likely to work. Hardware and pruning together address the same problem from both directions.

Can I install a cable myself?+

No. It requires working high in the crown, correct anchor placement and depth, hardware rated for the loads, and an understanding of where the forces actually go — get the position wrong and you concentrate stress at a new point rather than relieving it. Home-made cabling with a bolt and a length of wire is a recurring cause of failure and of wounds that never close.

What should I be told before agreeing to it?+

What specific failure the system is intended to prevent, what it does not address, the inspection interval and its cost, the expected service life, and what happens at the end of that life. If the answer to 'what does this not fix' is 'nothing, it makes the tree safe', that is the wrong answer and it is a reason to get a second opinion.

Can a cabled tree be described as safe?+

Safer against the one movement it holds, and not safe in any general sense. Cabling addresses one failure mode. The tree can still fail elsewhere, and a neglected system can itself become a hazard. Anyone describing a cabled tree as made safe is overselling what the hardware does, and that matters if the tree is over a house.
