How do I know whether my tree can be saved?+

It comes down to what is wrong and where. Problems in the branches — deadwood, an over-extended limb, a weak union — often have a pruning or hardware answer. When is pruning genuinely enough?+

When the defect is a load problem rather than a structural one. Removing deadwood, reducing end weight on a limb that has grown too long for its attachment, or taking out one of two competing stems can meaningfully lower the chance of failure. That works because you are reducing what the union has to hold, not because you have repaired anything.

What does cabling actually achieve?+

It caps how far two parts of a tree can separate under load. A flexible cable high in the crown restrains the extremes of movement while allowing normal sway. It does not glue a split together, restore strength decay has removed, or make a defective union sound. It reduces the chance of one specific separation, and it commits you to annual inspection.

Is monitoring a real option or just doing nothing?+

It is a real option when the consequence is low and the defect is stable — and it is only real if it has a stated interval and someone actually does it. A tree with a hollow base over an unused corner of a field, looked at every two years, is being managed. The same tree with nobody scheduled to look at it is being ignored.

How does an arborist decide between the options?+

By combining three things: how likely a part is to fail, how likely it is to hit something if it does, and how bad that would be. That is why two trees in identical condition get opposite recommendations — one has a driveway underneath and one has a hedgerow. Anyone assessing only the tree, without looking at what is beneath it, is answering half the question.

Does removal ever become the obvious answer?+

Yes, and usually for one of three reasons: the root plate or the base is compromised so stability cannot be restored, the tree has lost so much living crown that recovery is not realistic, or the mitigation that would be needed is more expensive and less certain than replacement. A defect alone is not that answer; a defect plus a high-consequence target and no workable mitigation usually is.

Can I get a second opinion?+

You should, particularly when the first opinion came from the company that would do the removal. A written risk assessment from someone not bidding on the work is inexpensive relative to a large removal, and it sometimes finds that no work is needed at all — which is a legitimate result a removal quote has no incentive to reach.

How much does it cost to keep a tree instead of removing it?+

Retention has an ongoing cost that removal does not: pruning on a cycle, an inspection interval, and hardware maintenance if any is installed. That is worth pricing over ten years rather than comparing one pruning visit to one removal. For a genuinely valuable tree the arithmetic usually favours keeping it; for a mediocre tree in the wrong place it usually does not.

Does a hollow tree have to come down?+

Not necessarily. A hollow tube resists bending far better than intuition suggests, and a trunk retaining roughly a third of its radius as sound wood around the full circumference still has meaningful strength. That assumes the shell is continuous — an open cavity, a seam or a crack through the shell changes the calculation entirely, and so does a lean loading one side.

What if I just want the tree gone because I do not like it?+

That is a legitimate reason and nobody needs to talk you out of it. What is worth knowing before you commit is whether the tree is providing shade, screening or wind shelter you will miss, and whether removing it exposes neighbouring trees that grew up sheltered by it. Both are easier to consider before the crew arrives than afterwards.

Will removing this tree affect the ones around it?+

It can, and the effect appears over the following season or two. A tree that grew inside a group built its taper and root plate in shelter; losing its windward neighbour exposes it to loads it has never carried, and new lean or root movement follows. If you are taking one of a group, ask which of the survivors are newly exposed.

How long can I wait to decide?+

It depends on the failure mode, and one case has a hard clock: a dead or declining ash gets more expensive and more dangerous to remove every year, because the wood goes brittle and crews stop climbing it. For most other trees a season of thinking costs nothing, provided the defect is stable and nobody is standing under it.
