Is some deadwood normal in a maple?+
Yes. Lower and interior branches that get shaded out as the crown expands die and eventually fall — that is ordinary self-pruning, not decline. The distinction is position and direction: shaded interior deadwood is normal; bare twigs and branches at the top and outer edges of the crown, getting worse year on year, is not.
What causes maple decline in this region?+
Most often the site. Compacted soil, roots cut or smothered by construction, grade raised over the root plate, mulch piled against the trunk, a root flare buried at planting, altered drainage, and winter salt near a treated road. Those account for far more Vermont maple decline than any pathogen, and none of them respond to a treatment.
Why would damage from years ago show up now?+
Because a tree draws on stored reserves and on the roots it still has, and decline only becomes visible when those run short. Two to five years after root damage is the standard interval — long enough that nobody connects the excavator to the thinning canopy. It is why the history of the site matters more than the current symptoms.
What is a girdling root and could my maple have one?+
A root circling the trunk instead of growing outward, usually because it was left circling in a nursery container. As root and trunk thicken they press together and the root strangles the transport tissue. Maples are among the more common victims. The tell is a trunk entering the ground with no visible flare, often with dieback concentrated on one side.
Does salt from the road cause this?+
It can, within the first several yards of anything treated in winter. Spray burns buds and twigs on the road-facing side; salt taken up through the roots shows as marginal leaf scorch in summer. The pattern is directional — worse on the side facing the road — which distinguishes it from a general decline affecting the whole crown.
Is it an insect or a disease?+
Occasionally, and it should be the last thing considered rather than the first. Foliar problems in wet Vermont springs affect leaves, often on the lower and inner canopy, and the tree usually recovers. Progressive top-down thinning that worsens each year is a root or vascular problem. Reaching for a spray before ruling out the site is how money gets wasted here.
What does tapping have to do with it?+
Nothing, in the sense that appropriate sugaring practice does not damage a healthy tree. Where it becomes relevant is a maple that is already stressed for other reasons, or a tree tapped heavily relative to its size. If a declining maple is tapped, that is worth mentioning to whoever is assessing it as part of the history.
Can the tree recover?+
It depends on the cause and how much crown is gone. A maple that has lost a modest part of its canopy to something correctable — mulch off the trunk, compaction relieved, watering through drought — often stabilises. One that has lost half its crown, or whose problem is severed roots, generally does not, because nothing replaces roots that were cut.
What can I do myself that helps?+
Pull mulch back off the trunk and expose the root flare. Keep the mower and string trimmer away from the bark — a ring of mulch does that. Water deeply and infrequently over the whole root zone in a genuine drought. Those three cost nothing and address a real share of what actually ails maples in Vermont yards.
When does a declining maple become a hazard?+
When the dead material is over something and large enough to matter, or when decline reaches the trunk and the base. Dieback in itself is a health question; dead limbs over a driveway and decay at the root collar are risk questions. Those are assessed differently, and the second one is the reason to have a declining maple looked at rather than watched.
Should I remove it or wait?+
Get the cause identified first, because it changes the answer. If the decline is correctable and the crown is largely intact, waiting a season while the correction takes effect is reasonable. If a significant part of the crown is gone or the base is involved, waiting mostly makes the eventual removal more expensive and less safe.
