What about steps between the driveway and the back garden?+

Steps stop a wheeled machine, and there is no clever way around that. The options are a temporary ramp of scaffold boards where the rise is modest and the machine is light, a route around the other side of the house, or a smaller machine carried through. Photograph the steps with something for scale when you request the estimate.

How much slope can a grinder work on?+

Less than a track machine and much less than people assume, and side-slope is more limiting than straight up or down. Wet ground reduces it further. On a genuinely steep site the safe answer is often that the machine works from the top or the bottom with the stump approached along the contour, which may mean an approach route much longer than the direct one.

Does soft ground rule out grinding?+

It can, seasonally. A grinder on saturated spring ground ruts badly and can bog, and the damage outlasts the job. On a wet site the sensible move is to wait for frozen ground or dry summer conditions — which is worth knowing, because a stump is almost never urgent and rescheduling it costs nothing.

What if the stump is against a wall or a foundation?+

It gets ground as close as the machine can safely reach and the remainder is left or excavated by hand. The cutting wheel needs clearance to swing and the operator has to keep the frame off the structure. Ask what will be left before the work, because 'the stump is gone' and 'the stump is gone except the six inches against the wall' are different outcomes.

Can the machine cross a septic field?+

Not without knowing where it is. Mounded and shallow in-ground systems are damaged by concentrated weight, and the damage is expensive and invisible until the system fails. Locate the tank lids and the field from your permit records before the visit and flag them — a crew has no way to see any of it, and this is the single most costly mistake on a rural narrow-access job.

Does narrow access make it more expensive?+

Yes, and mostly in time rather than in machine cost. A smaller machine removes less material per hour, the route takes longer to traverse, and material often has to be barrowed out rather than raked aside. Expect a narrow-access stump to cost meaningfully more than the same stump in an open lawn, and expect that gap to widen with diameter.

Is hand excavation ever the answer?+

For a small stump with no machine access, sometimes — but it is slow, and on anything of size it costs more than grinding would. It is also genuinely hard work in stony Vermont soil. Where it makes sense is a stump that is small, close to a structure, and in a spot no wheeled machine will ever reach.

Do I still need Dig Safe on a narrow-access job?+

Yes, and arguably more. Grinding is excavation and the notification requirement applies regardless of the machine size. Narrow side passages are also exactly where services run — the gas line, the water service, the feed to an outside tap or a shed — because that is the short route from the street to the back of the house.

What can I do to make the job cheaper?+

Clear the route completely, remove a fence panel or take a gate off if you can, mark every private service you know about, and combine several stumps into one visit. Setup and access are most of the cost on a narrow site, so anything that shortens the route or removes an obstacle has a disproportionate effect on the price.
